Spiderwoman

After living and going to school on the Navajo Reservation in elementary school, I did a high school project on food sustainability and environmental challenges to health on the reservation. Access to produce and nutritious food is extremely difficult and there is a movement to return to healthier native foods. This piece illustrates a traditional Navajo rug woven by the legendary Spiderwoman (originator of rug weaving) using colors from native foods that existed before the arrival of Europeans
